Therapeutic Riding

Briefly put, "therapeutic horse riding is a global term which embraces all horse-related activities for people with disabilities. Therapeutic riding is a method which permits teaching riding skills to riders with special needs." *

Therapeutic Riding is categorized as an Equine-Assisted Activity (a form of Animal-Assisted Activity) by both the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA) and the Federation of Riding for the Disabled International (FRDI). Therapeutic riding is related yet different from Hippotherapy, an approach that is considered to be a form of Equine-Assisted Therapy (or Animal-Assisted Therapy).

The governing body for therapeutic riding in Canada is the Canadian Therapeutic Riding Association (CanTRA), which has established a standard of excellence with regards to the certification of therapeutic riding instructors, including a new accreditation program for therapeutic riding centres.

There also exist a number of provincial therapeutic riding associations that are affiliated with CanTRA.
