About Us
Upon first discovering the fields of animal-, equine- and nature-assisted interventions in 2001, I noticed that there was very little information about these fields as they exist in Canada. While ample information was available about animal-assisted therapy and related nature-based approaches in the United States, information about similar Canadian practices and programs was, in contrast, challenging to track down. I felt adrift in a very deep ocean.
Informal conversations with practitioners in this field as well as the general public, including a full-scale, national, bilingual research study conducted as part of my master's degree, confirmed what I already knew - that there was a need for a centralized Canadian source of information in order to increase the visibility of these fascinating therapeutic modalities and help educate the public, potential clients, persons interested in embarking on a career in this field, professionals referring clients to such services, etc.
The initial version of this website was launched in 2008, which generated hundreds of emails offering glowing feedback and asking questions. The site has been praised for its comprehensiveness and usefulness as a resource not only by Canadians, but people in the US, France, Germany, Romania, Israel, Sweden, Denmark, Mexico, Panama, and Australia. Many have inquired seeking referrals to specific services, assistance with research or school projects, support for starting their own practices, or have sought advice and career guidance on how to get into this field professionally.
The site was redesigned and relaunched in 2010 with a fresh new look and updated information that is hoped to be more user-friendly. This site, as well as its French-language sister site, are continually under development and will be updated whenever possible.
